Rules & Information

Homepage | Back to Gallery | Back to Message Boards

Welcome to a car and a camera! We believe photography is one of the best ways humans can express themselves on all levels. Our goal is to create a site where anyone with a camera is welcomed to, and encouraged to share their photos with others. Think of it as an outlet, a place where you can put your feelings on the screen and show others how you see the world around you.

While photographs come in all shapes and sizes and the subject matter is unlimited, we do have some rules as to what is allowed on our site. Please use the following guidelines as a guide to what can and cannot be used on our site. Please follow these closely, as straying from these guidelines can, and generally will, lead to your uploading privledges being removed.

Please also note that these rules are subject to change at any time with or without notice. Please check back every now and then for any changes.

Users

Our photo gallery has 3 distinctive user levels which will be explained in detail:

Anonymous:
When a person who has not become a member visits the photo gallery, they are considered Anonymous users. They have the ability to view photos in all public photo albums. They can rate photos, however, they cannot leave comments (to cut down on spam) and cannot upload any photos.

Registered:
Registered users are just that; users who have registered and have member status. Registered users may rate photographs, may create their own private albums and may upload up to 10mb worth of photos to both public and private albums. Registered users are not allowed to leave comments on photos other than their own. In order to do so, please become a contributor. Registered users uploading photos to "public state albums" must wait for their photos to be approved by the Admin. Private albums do not need to be approved.

Contributors:
Contributors are those who have uploaded photos into one or more of the public "State" albums. The photos must follow all guidelines and contribute to the site. Once a registered user has shown that they are willing to contribute to the site as stated above, their level will be increased to "Contributor" status. Contributors can upload an unlimited number of photos to both public and private photo albums. They may also comment on other photos that have been uploaded by others. ***PLEASE NOTE*** Anycontributorr found abusing theirprivilegess by leaving rude, abusive or spam comments, or those who upload photos that do not follow our guidelines will have their rank reduced back to registered user, or will be banned from the site depending on the severity of the abuse.
If you feel you should have been upgraded toContributorr, but have yet to be, please send an email to admin@acarandacamera.com and we will take a look at your situation.

Photo Upload Guidelines

Please be sure to read this section carefully. All of the following rules must be followed in order for you to keep your uploadingprivilegess.

File Types:
We allow only image files to be uploaded. For a complete list of the fileextensionss that can be handled by imagemagick (Our compiler), please see http://www.imagemagick.org/script/formats.php. Again, please keep in mind that movie files (.avi, .mpg...etc), sound files (.midi, .mp3...ect) and other files (.txt, .doc, .zip...etc) are not allowed.

Allowed Content:
While we would like to offer you the ability to upload anything at all, due to legal and other reasons, we must limit the content that can be uploaded to our site. Allowed content includes photographs of: Scenery, places, animals...etc.
Photographs with the following are not allowed:

* NOTE: By saying we do not allow photographs of people, or children, what we're talking about is a specific photo of a group of people or children. If your photo, for example, is a city setting and the subject matter is notprimarilyy the people in the photograph, that is fine. Also, if your photograph is of a person, as long as that person is notreadilyy identifiable, that is also fine. What we're trying to avoid here is, again, as an example, a picture of a family waving at the camera standing in front of a scenic view. A car and a Camera is geared towards scenery. We hope you understand and we appreciate your cooperation with this.

Sizes:
All photos must be smaller than 2048*2048 and at least 600x400px. A thumbnail of your photo will be created automatically for your album and public albums.

Rights to your Photos
With a few exceptions, you will retain all rights to the photographs you upload. The exceptions are as follows:

We (A car and a Camera) reserve the right to use your photographs in the following methods with or without your approval:

Other than stated above, we will not use your photographs for any reason without your approval.

It was brought to my attention that this wording is a bit confusing to some in regards to how we use your photos. Please allow me to explain a little more in depth:
If we are going to advertise the site, for example on television, in a magaizine...etc, we would like to give a few examples of what is on the site. To do that, we would use a few photos we select from the site. This is ONLY to advertise the website. We are NOT selling your photos.
As to the second statement, we may choose a very pretty picture someone has uploaded and use it on the home page (www.acarandacamera.com) instead of only in the gallery. Again, this is part of our website. It does not mean we're going to upload your photos to other websites.
If you have ANY concerns as to how we're going to use your photos, and these concerns might prevent you from contributing to our site, please Contact us and I will try and answer any questions you might have. Thank you.

Please also note that any photographs found in your private album (Not available to the public) that are not included in the public galleries as well will never be used by us for any reason at all. Your private photos are just that... private. We will respect your privacy.

Public and Private Albums & Keywords

When you upload photos, you have two choices as to where you can store them on our site. Those are your private albums and public albums. Alternatively, you may upload into private albums only and use keywords to share photos in your private album in the public albums as well. We will explain:

Public Albums:
On A Car And A Camera, we have 50 public State albums to choose from. When you upload a photograph, if you are not uploading it to your private album, please choose the correct State in which the photo was taken. For example, when uploading a photograph that was taken in Michigan, you would scroll down in the album list to "Michigan" and choose that as your upload album. Please see "Keywords" for information on uploading into your private album.

Private Albums:
Some photos you may just want to store on our site and are not intended for public view. These photos can be uploaded into your private album(s). To create a private album, follow these steps:

1.) Log in
2.) Click on "Create/ order my albums" found near the top of the page under the main menu links. 3.) To make a new album, click the word "New" and a new line will appear in the text box. 4.) Click "New album" in the text box to highlight it (if it isn't already) and type a new name for the album. 5.) You may repeat the above steps as many times as needed until you've created all your albums (Note, you can add more later). 6.) You may also change the name of an existing album by highlighting the albums name and entering a new one. 7.) When satisfied, click on "Apply modifications" to save your changes.

Keywords:
Please read this section carefully!

Keywords are used for many purposes, including searching for specific photos and putting the photos in the right categories and albums.

Please note the following: Keywords are separated by spaces, not commas (,). Phrases CANNOT be used as a keyword.

If you choose to share a photo in your private album, in one of the public States albums, you would use a keyword. For example:

You upload a picture into your private album. The picture is of a beach in California. You have the following options with keywords: To share the photo in the "California" public album, you would put "California" in the keywords box. You could also put "beach" in the keywords box and then anyone who searches for "beach" will be able to see the photograph (As long as it was shared in the public "California" album.

When sharing a photo in a public State album, please note that States containing 2 words (New Mexico) must be written as New_Mexico (with the _ underscore). You can use as many keywords as you like. Remember, though, only photos shown in public albums can be searched for using keywords. If the photo is in your private album only, it will not be shown in search results. Your private photos are private!
If you have any questions regarding keywords, please feel free to Contact us with your questions.
